What is NAMI?
NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI is a national organization with state and 1,100 local affiliate organizations throughout the country.
NAMI focuses on three cornerstones of activity that offer hope, reform and health. These cornerstones are Support, Education and Advocacy.
Steadfast commitment and unceasing belief in NAMI’s mission by grassroots advocates have produced profound changes.
NAMI advocates for increased support for research and for nondiscriminatory and equitable federal and state treatment opportunities.
Mission Statement
Provide Information, support, and a sense of belonging to persons with serious mental illness and their families
Provide Advocacy for nondiscriminatory and equitable federal, state, and corporate policies
Provide Research into the causes, symptoms, and treatments for severe brain disorders
Provide Education to eliminate the pervasive stigma toward persons affected by serious mental illness
NAMI Birmingham is a local affiliate of NAMI in Birmingham, Alabama. It is a volunteer organization exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. It is composed of family members, friends, peers and professionals.
Anyone who subscribes to the philosophy of NAMI Birmingham’s mission is invited to join.
